Viby is a district in the southwestern part of Aarhus
with almost 30,000 inhabitants. The "J" stands for Jutland
, as there is another town called Viby on the island of Zealand called Viby Sj. It is primarily a working class area, including many immigrants who also live in Viby J. It's also the home of several educational institutes, such as Viby Amtsgymnasium
and Århus Business College
, making it a centre of education for its part of the city. It's also the local place for shops, with the shopping centre (picture bottom right) which holds space for a supermarkets, and about 25 other shops. Two major public housing projects is located in Viby J. Rosenhøj
is made up by low-rise apartment building, while Grøfthøjparken is mainly made up by 4–6 story buildings and one high-rise block, which has 17 floors and is 51 meters tall. It is also the 6th tallest building in greater Århus.
Viby is known for its taekwondo
-club, which has fostered several European Champions, and the motorway E45
, which ends rather abruptly.
Viby Torv is one of Århus' southernmost traffic nodes, and although few renovations have been started in this area, the new municipality house off Skanderborgvej is quite striking. There is also a shopping centre in the town, called Vibycenteret.
