Vicnet began in 1993 as a joint State Library of Victoria and RMIT University project to investigate the impact of the internet and online information on public libraries and the broader community in Victoria. Vicnet developed as an ISP in its formative years which enabled it to grow a range of other activities including delivery of project management services and internet training services for community. Over time Vicnet became a division of the State Library of Victoria

 and is now an important part of the libraries vision.

Services

For many years Vicnet offered a number of connectivity products including DSL and dial-up accounts primarily fro community and government clients. As the market became competitive in the mid to late "naughties" Vicnet took the decision to withdraw from this form of Internet service. Vicnet continues to provide web development and a rang of web hosting options and products. It continues to work actively with government and community groups in projects that support digital literacy. These have a strong skills and training focus and are targeted and community groups in need. This include project such as My Connected Community and the Victorian Public Internet Access Program.
