The Victorian Railways
Y class diesel electric locomotive
is a small branch line and shunting unit built by Clyde Engineering
(now EDI Rail
). Three separate orders were delivered. The first reused bogies and traction motor
s from the scrapped Swing Door
Electric Multiple Unit
suburban trains.
After closure of branch lines across the state and the end of short pick-up goods trains, use of the class dropped. Withdrawals commenced from 1985 and large-scale scrappings commenced during 1991 and 1992. Today four are in service with V/Line
as carriage yard shunters, with others owned by freight operators Pacific National
and El Zorro
, or railway preservation and heritage railway
groups.
In May 2011 five Pacific National owned Y classes (Y110, Y113, Y121, Y138 and Y150) were scrapped, having been stored at the South Dynon Workshops for a number of years.
