The municipality was part of the Grandson District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Villars-Burquin became part of the new district of Jura-Nord Vaudois.

Villars-Burquin has an area, , of 4.82 square kilometres (1.9 sq mi). Of this area, 1.6 km² (0.617763453748056 sq mi) or 33.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 2.94 km² (1.1 sq mi) or 61.0% is forested.
