Collet first became head coach in 2000 after a 13-year career as a player in the Ligue Nationale de Basketball
. He coached French squad Le Mans
for six years between the 2000-01 and 2006-07 season, leading the team to a League Championship and the French Cup in 2004, as well as the Semaine des As in 2006. While with the club, he was named national coach of the year in 2001, 2004, and 2006, before leaving the team in 2007 He returned to the French league in the 2008-09 season, where he promptly led ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne
to the French Championship, their first since 2002.
Collet was hired as French national team coach in March of 2009 following a disappointing qualifying run towards Eurobasket 2009
that forced the team to qualify through the additional qualifying round. After successfully leading the team through the additional qualifying round as the 16th and final Eurobasket qualifier, he coached the national team for the first time at Eurobasket 2009
. He led the team to a fifth place finish, good enough to qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship
