The Volcan Mountains are a mountain range in San Diego County
, California
.
Volcan Mountain, rising over 5000 feet (1,524 m) on the Pacific Crest, is iconic as the location of both the headwaters of the San Dieguito River and as the highest point in the 94000 acres (380.4 km²) San Dieguito River Park (which spans from the mountains in Julian, CA to the beach in Del Mar, CA) with its eastern slopes falling rapidly to the expansive Anza-Borrego Desert below.
Located two miles (3 km) north of Julian on the east side of Farmer Road, Volcan Mountain is home to a mixed conifer, oak and cedar forest, rugged canyons, and seasonal ponds. The Mountain supports 22 sensitive plant species, 39 sensitive animal species and 30 different vegetation communities. Two trails will take you to the summit at Volcan Mountain Preserve, which are managed by the County of San Diego.
The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, The Trust for Public Land, San Dieguito River Park, County of San Diego, California Department of Fish & Game, and the Volcan Mountain Preserve Foundation have been active partners in the protection of Volcan Mountain for over 13 years. Approximately 9000 acres (36.4 km²) of the 11000 acres (44.5 km²) Rutherford Ranch on the north end of Volcan Mountain have been purchased by a coalition of public agencies, including the Conservancy. In addition in 2002, the Conservancy purchased a key 27 acres (109,265.2 m²) parcel – linking Volcan Mountain Preserve and Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve East.
Currently the 420 acres (1.7 km²) Russell Homestead property, located high on the west central slopes of Volcan Mountain, is the next critical piece to help protect the Mountain – the beacon of the San Dieguito River Park.
The Julian VOR (VHF omnidirectional range
) (JLI - 114.0 Mhz) is located at the top of the north summit, at approximately 5500 feet (1,676.4 m), off Volcan Rd.
