. It descends from Bredo Munthe, who on 19 December 1755 was ennobled under the name von Munthe af Morgenstierne. The family is included in the Yearbook of the Danish Nobility

Bredo von Munthe af Morgenstierne descended patrilineally from bailiff Christopher Giertsen Morgenstierne. Christopher Morgenstierne married Birgitta Ludvigsdatter Munthe, with whom he had seven children. They took the name Munthe from their mother. From them descended the priest Ludvig Christophersen Munthe, who is the progenitor of the Munthe family as well as the noble family von Munthe of Morgenstierne.
Description: On a shield divided into two fields, whereof the upper is silver and the lower is red, in the 1st field two chopped and crossed brown tree stems under a ten-pointed golden star, and in the 2nd field three silver balls. On the helm a noble coronet and up from this two bear paws holding three silver balls. Supporters: two against each other sitting and onto the shield looking brown bears.

The name von Munthe af Morgenstierne consists of the names of two older families, Munthe and Morgenstierne, from which Bredo von Munthe af Morgenstierne descended. When he applied for ennoblement, he claimed that these two families were originally noble.Origin

Syphilia Morgenstierne Controversy
In the 1970s, Norwegian novellist Mari Toft began calling herself Syphilia Morgenstierne. This led to reactions from the family, and former secreary in the Ministry of Trade Alexis von Munthe af Morgenstierne reported her to the police for having used a protected name.
