The station went on the air as WAFL-FM on 1981-03-20. On 1984-12-05, the station changed its call sign to the current one of WAFL.

The station originally broadcast a country format with the tagline of "The Country King". After that, the station changed its format and became WAFL - Great Hits.

Another change in the mid-90s brought about Eagle 97.7 which played hits from the 80s and 90s, as well as current popular songs.

Today it is known on air as eagle 977, mostly playing songs from the 90s to now.
