WHBK began operating in 1954 as WMMH, a 500 watt, daylight-only station.
Original owner Dean Shields played "music for a Happy Day." Famous WMMH announcers include Eldridge Fox of the Kingsmen, Charles "Chuck" Rice - former national anchor with Associated Press Radio, and Bob Caldwell - retired weatherman for WLOS TV in Asheville.
In 1988 new owners Hurley and Karen Buff changed the station name to WHBK, adding broadcasting for the first time at night. Upon purchase of the station, the format was changed to Southern Gospel Music during the day and Contemporary Christian at night.
Dr. Bruce and Mildred Phillips purchased WHBK in 1991, bringing national award-winning Gospel DJ, Rickey Seay, in as manager. Long-time announcer Ricky West continued working at the station. WHBK format changed to The Best in Southern Gospel, and added coverage of Madison High School Patriots sports by Ricky Seay, Quinton Ramsey, Gerald Tomberlin, and Allen Stines.
The station briefly changed hands in the winter of 2008 and broadcast classic country music with Carolina sports.
In March 2009, Seay Broadcasting purchased WHBK. The station format changed back to Gospel Music and Christian programming. Also returning will be Madison Patriot Sports, which you'll hear live over the internet.
