History

From the 1970s until September 1986, WIOG operated on 106.3 MHz licensed to Saginaw. 106.3 FM signed on in 1969 as WSBM, featuring a MOR/adult contemporary music format. Later in the 1970s the calls became WIOG (the calls resembled the number "106," as in its dial position) and the format shifted to AOR. In 1980, with the addition of some disco

records to its AOR playlist, WIOG moved to a Top 40 format, eventually taking on the name "Hits 106" and becoming one of the most popular radio stations in the market. The 102.5 frequency was originally home to WNEM-FM (later WGER

station which was one of the pioneers of FM Stereo broadcasting in Michigan. With its big signal, WGER was one of the most successful easy-listening stations in Michigan; as late as 1985, when it was using TM Programming's beautiful-music package, the station was posting #1 ratings among adult listeners aged 25–49 in the Saginaw and Flint markets, according to TM promotional literature of the time (1)

After the owner of WIOG bought WGER then sold the old station at 106.3, WIOG and WGER switched frequencies in September 1986; WGER moved its beautiful music to 106.3 which evolved into adult-contemporary, a format that continues to this day, and WIOG's CHR format was planted at 102.5. The move paid off, as WIOG quickly became a powerhouse in mid-Michigan broadcasting. In the fall of 1986, aided by its new, more powerful signal and a "Free Money" promotion where they gave away a chance for $1,000 to $10,000 every hour during an economic recession in the area, the station attained an Arbitron rating of 30.3%, becoming the highest-rated radio station in the entire country 1.

WIOG got strong competition in the early 1990s from 100.5 WTCF "The Fox", which soon surpassed them as the dominant CHR station. Due to the competition and to a desire to appeal to more adult listeners, WIOG spent most of the 1990s as a Hot Adult Contemporary station. WTCF's departure from the CHR format in 1999, however, left the door open for WIOG to move back to CHR, which it soon did. Today WIOG remains one of the most popular stations in the Tri-Cities market, though its showing in the Flint market is more modest due to competition from CHR WWCK-FM

Recent Radio Shows

Some of the radio shows as of right now are the Early Shift, containing Nate (news), Demas, Bob and Jackie. Demas used to work the "Afternoon" shift, but has been replaced by Mile High from 4-8 PM, while Ryan Seacrest is aired from 1-4 PM. Rachael Geddes works the mid-morning shift, from 10-1PM. The show is notable for the "Throwback Lunch", previously called "The 90's @ Noon".

Mile High does the "afternoon"shift from 4-8PM. He originally did the Playhouse from 7-12PM, but has recently switched positions. "Riddle of the Day" is done shortly after 5, where Mile High will say a riddle and ask for any caller to solve the riddle to gain a prize. The "Phat 5 Before 5" is where Mile High plays the top five requested songs of the day based on your phone calls. Pay attention to the countdown to get a prize. You must be caller 10 for the possibility of winning. The "Phat 5 Before 5" was previously called the "Fat 5 at 5" and played at 5.

The Playhouse

The "Playhouse" is a segment from 8PM-12AM, hosted by Swifty. Some of the notable events in the show are "The 6 to 1 Countdown", where Swifty will ask people to call in and be a "Guest" DJ. If you pay attention to the countdown, be caller number 10 and are 18 or older, you could win a prize. This is done at 9PM. The "Playhouse Lounge" is something done every Monday and Wednesday, generally. Swifty will create a topic of discussion and listeners call in and voice their opinion or post something on the WIOG Playhouse Facebook page.

The "Delete or Download" section of this show is where Swifty will play a new song and listeners will call in or post on the Facebook page either delete or download. That is usually done at quarter after 10. "SwiftTrivia" used to be a part of the show where Swifty would ask you three questions in order for you to win a prize. You must get all three questions right in order to get the prize. This was usually done a few minutes before 11.

Shoutouts/bedchecks are usually done around 11:30 PM. Shoutouts were originally done at the beginning of the show, where listeners could call in and give a shout out. They could also comment on the Playhouse's Facebook post and they would get read on air. To switch things up, shoutouts were switched to bedchecks and therefore also known as nighty-nights.

The Early Shift

The Early Shift is from 5:30-10 AM. There have been many changes regarding the Early Shift, the most recent of which Ashley and Bob were added to the DJ roster. Before that, it was Demas, Mandy and Nate. Mandy moved out of the area, leaving it to Nate and Demas for a period of time. The crew of this show (Including the rest of the WIOG staff) are very interactive with the events in surrounding areas. Now consisting of Demas, Ashley and Bob. Monday, known as "Eww, Monday", Tuesday they have Movie Line with Greg Walton. This is where Greg Walton gets on the air and informs people about upcoming movies coming to theaters and DVD releases. Of course, him and Demas get into it about what movie is going to be better. This also occurs on Friday mornings. On Wednesday, they have the People's Court, where they bring up a topic and have listeners call in and give their opinions. Thursday is known as, "Love and stuff", in which Dr. Tom and Maria Shaw come in and talk about family issues and horoscopes.

Friday is the Wake Up Jam @ 6 with DJ Captain E-Man, playing remixed versions of songs to wake everybody up for a good Friday.

Mile High

Mile High, former Playhouse DJ, now hosts the afternoon show. During this time, there consists of the Phat 5 Before %, of which the top five songs of the day are played. Pay attention to the countdown and be over 18 and caller 10 to win a prize. A little after five, your knowledge is tested with the Riddle of the Day.
