WOW VX
Encyclopedia
WOWvx is a type of monitor screen and software tools manufactured by Philips
which offers 3D images without glasses for several viewers at a time. Philips sells professionals 3D displays for the advertising, entertainment and 3D visualization markets. WOWvx uses the 3D format called 2D-plus-depth
that has a greyscale depth map
next to each 2D frame. Philips initiated a WOWvx community website. You can download samples of WOWvx 3D animation and films (to see the 2D-plus-depth on your 2D monitor just rename the file extension to WMV and play it with your windows media player). For content designers there is a professional plug-in available for 3ds Max.
Philips indicated it would introduce 3DTV for consumers within a few years' time, but didn't give a specific date.
Philips has been marketing its no-glasses based 3D technologies through a pro-active approach for a long time, believing that over time, 3D TVs will bring a true 3D experience to the home.
Its main goal of stopping production and sales is to be able to arrive at an industry wide standard for encoding and delivery of 3D content to 3D TV's. Because of market developments Philips no longer justified its previous pro-active approach. The point when and if mass adoption of 3D TV will occur has changed. As a consequence of this, Philips has decided to partly scale down its investments in this area. The TV business of Consumer Lifestyle will evaluate the options to develop 3D consumer televisions in the future, depending on the latest insights, standard and the level of consumer interest and demand. The display and content technology developed by Philips is currently pro-actively being licensed in the market.
