Walter Steinitz (1882-1963) was an Israeli medical doctor, zoologist and hydrologist, and founding director of the Marine Biological Laboratory of the Hebrew University in Eilat, on the Red Sea

Steinitz was born in Wroclaw
(then Breslav), Germany
on February 12, 1882.
In 1936 he joined the Department of Zoology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
.
He inspired his three sons to go into science. His son, Heinz Steinitz
, continued his path, as a senior Israeli marine biologist and herpetologist.
Steinitz died in 1963.
