The bus station opened in June 2005 replacing the previous bus station on this site. It cost £6 million and has improved interchange access with both the tube and rail stations at Walthamstow Central. According to Waltham Forest borough the bus station is the third busiest in the capital and it is open 24 hours.

In April 2011, it was proposed by consultants, as part of masterplanning for Walthamstow town centre, that the bus station be demolished, and the area converted into a park.
