Webster Avenue is one of the longest thoroughfares in the Bronx. It stretches for 5.8 miles (9.33 kilometres) from Melrose
to Woodlawn
(on the Bronx-Westchester
borderline). The road starts at an intersection with Melrose Avenue, East 165th Street, Brook Avenue and Park Avenue in Melrose, ending at Nereid Avenue (East 238th Street) and East 240th Street in the town of Woodlawn. There are no subway lines along this road, uncharacteristic to the streets it parallels, Jerome Avenue
, Grand Concourse

, which all have subway lines. Until 1973, Webster Ave. north of Fordham Road was covered by the IRT Third Avenue Line

Webster Avenue begins a large intersection with four roads including Melrose Avenue and East 165th Street. Webster begins in a northward direction, parallelling the Metro-North railroad tracks and Brook Avenue, one of the roads present at the terminus. At .2 of a mile, East 167th Street intersects Webster. At this intersection, East 167th goes from a two-way road to a one-way going westward. At Claremont Parkway, the parallel Brook Avenue comes to an end and Webster continues north. At 1.2 miles (1.9 km), the Cross Bronx Expressway interchanges with Webster. East Tremont Avenue (East 177th Street) intersects soon after in the eastern section of Tremont
. Most of the southern half of Webster Avenue is concurrent with U.S. Route 1

Webster continues, entering the eastern portion of Fordham
. In Fordham, a large intersection is reached by Webster. Streets present at this intersection include Webster, Decatur Avenue, East Fordham Road, and the nearby Third Avenue. Decatur Avenue parallels Webster as both roads continue north. Bedford Park Boulevard (East 200th Street) intersects in Bedford Park as Webster heads towards Woodlawn. Soon after the intersection with Bedford Park Boulevard (East 200th Street), the Mosholu Parkway
