Welcome Here Kind Stranger
Encyclopedia
Welcome Here Kind Stranger is a 1978
album by Paul Brady
.
After leaving The Johnstons
, Paul Brady toured with Planxty
, but never recorded with them. His first solo album, Welcome Here Kind Stranger, from 1978, is his only solo folk album prior to his embarking on a successful, long-term foray into the realm of mainstream rock. It was voted "Folk Album of the Year" by Melody Maker
magazine. Initially released on vinyl and on cassette, it was later reissued on CD, appearing on Paul's co-producer Dónal Lunny
's Mulligan label (LUNCD024). The title of the album is a phrase taken from a song on the album entitled "The Lakes of Pontchartrain
".
The songs on Welcome Here Kind Stranger are highly arranged - instruments are heard then disappear as they are replaced by others. Two of the songs on the album are long ballads - "I Am A Youth That's Inclined To Ramble" and "The Lakes of Pontchartrain
". The latter song had been recorded previously by Planxty on Cold Blow and the Rainy Night
, though Paul's version is slightly different. He later recorded it in Irish as "Bruach Loch Pontchartrain" for the 2002
compilation album Eist Vol.2: Éist Arís, Songs In Their Native Language. The historical context of an Irishman in Louisiana is unclear. It may be set during the Battle of New Orleans.
To launch Welcome Here Kind Stranger, Paul gave a concert on July 21, 1978 at Liberty Hall, Dublin. With the help of Andy Irvine, Dónal Lunny, Liam O'Flynn, Matt Molloy, Paddy Glackin and Noel Hill, and the addition of 4 more tunes, he presented the music from the album, minus Young Edmund In The Lowlands Low and The Boy On The Hilltop/Johnny Goin' To Ceilidh. The Liberty Hall performance was recorded on reel-to-reel tape at Paul's request, for his own archives. In 2000
he re-discovered these tapes in his attic, and failing to drum up interest on the part of a major label, he took on the task of putting them out himself. The Missing Liberty Tapes, released in 2002 on CD on his own PBCD label, is the result.
