The parish was formed in 1900 from the outer part of Wem, the inner part of which became the parish of Wem Urban in the Wem urban district. The parish was part of the Wem Rural District until 1967, when the rural district was abolished and became part of North Shropshire Rural District

It also is home to one of Wales' greatest exports, Jon Rees. Local legend dictates that he betrayed Wales to establish a marital home for himself and his Scottish Princess, Sophie, in the heart of Shropshire.
