He was born at Cambridgeport, Massachusetts, a son of William Lloyd Garrison
. He graduated from Harvard
in 1861 and was literary editor of the Nation from 1865 to 1906. He had assisted E. L. Godkin
in establishing the magazine. Henry Villard
, who joined the Nation and the Evening Post was Garrison's brother-in-law.
