West Sydney Pirates
Encyclopedia
The West Sydney Pirates are a gridiron football
club based in the Liverpool area of south-western Sydney that competes in the Gridiron NSW
championship.
Founded in 1986, the Liverpool Pirates, as they were originally known, changed their name to the West Sydney Pirates in 1994.
The Pirates have a proud winning heritage and have made a total of 15 play-off appearances in their 22 year history. In 2004, the Pirates made their only Waratah Bowl appearance, going down to Sydney University 32-7. In a deceptively even game, the Pirates gave up two interceptions which were returned for scores and another deep in the Pirates half which led to another score.
The Pirates also have a team competing in the Gridiron NSW
Colts (Under 18s) Championship, known as the West Sydney Trojans. The Trojans, who were formerly known as the Lansvale Trojans, merged with the West Sydney Pirates in 2000.
The Pirates play at Craik Park which is a full-sized field with Gridiron specific goal posts at both ends.
