History

The original shopping centre was opened in 1961. It received its first upgrade in 1968, followed by further upgrades in 1976 and 1979.

The latest upgrade started in 1999 with the closure and subsequent demolition of the existing Westfield centre and closure of part of the existing Northgate centre. On January 22, 2000, Westfield temporarily shut the centre to pave the way for a two-year A$360 million redevelopment project which doubled retail space and brought more major retailers on board, including restaurants and cinemas.

1999 - 2001 redevelopment

The four-stage revedelopment saw Westfield take over and incorporate the adjacent Northgate shopping centre (known for a while as Westfield Northgate) into the new centre.
  • Stage 1, the redevelopment of the Westfield Northgate side, opened on October 26, 2000. The Northgate name was dropped and this side became known as part of Westfield Hornsby. The initial stage included construction of 50 specialty shops and a Coles supermarket. Kmart also redesigned their store, knocking out a side wall to become a mall entry/exit.
  • Stage 2 opened on May 31, 2001. This was the old Westfield Hornsby side, and was physically separate from the Stage 1 development until August, when the Level 1 underground walkway opened. Stage 2 included a Woolworths supermarket, more than 40 specialty shops, and two levels of parking.
  • Stage 3 was completed on September 13, 2001, with the opening of David Jones, Target, Gowings (later both replaced by JB Hi-fi on the upper level, Thomas Dux on the middle level and Dan Murphys on the lower level), a Food Court, and 100 specialty stores. At this stage, the centre has increased from 48,000 m² to 98,000 m².
  • The Grand Opening of the new centre was held on September 26, 2001.
  • Stage 4 opened in November and included a nine-screen Greater Union cinema complex and alfresco restaurant precinct.

Access

Westfield Hornsby has two carparks, the Albert Street carpark on the Westfield side, and the Burdett Street carpark on the old Northgate side. The Burdett Street carpark remains largely unchanged from its original state prior to the redevelopment except that it now contains boom gates and parking fees, and now incorporates access to the centre from the intermediate levels.
Westfield Hornsby is a short walk from Hornsby railway station.
