Wheatland suffered extensive damage on May 31, 1985, when an F5 tornado
struck the area. The tornado killed 18 (seven of whom were Wheatland residents), injured over 300, and was easily the most powerful and damaging in Pennsylvania
's history (see 1985 United States-Canadian tornado outbreak).

living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.1% were non-families. 38.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.85.
In the borough the population was spread out with 18.3% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 27.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 85.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.9 males.
