Wheatland Center, New York
Encyclopedia
Wheatland Center is the rural area in the Town of Wheatland
surrounding the intersection of Wheatland Center and Scottsville-Mumford Road
s. Once known as Hall's Corners, it today shows little evidence of its past.
That past has been described by architect Carl F Schmidt in History of the Town of Wheatland: Scottsville Mumford Garbutt Belcoda Beulah Wheatland Center, first published in Rochester
in 1953 in very limited numbers. In 2002, the Wheatland Historical Association commissioned the Higginson reprint.
Much has changed in the more than half century since Schmidt wrote about Wheatland Center. The wallboard plant went out of business because of more efficient competition. Today, that plant, greatly expanded and improved, serves as a metals reclamation center where, for instance, silver is recovered from spent photographic materials.
The area on the west side of Wheatland Center Road and between North and Scottsville-Mumford Roads once held houses and businesses. Today, there is nothing there but scrub land on the eastern side of the former gravel pit
