Each episode is 13 minutes, with two per viewing time. Wild Animal Baby Explorers airs on local PBS stations.

Sammy

Sammy, the cute, curious skunk featured in [Wild Animal Baby] magazine, is an explorer in the making. His enthusiasm for learning is matched only by his love of hide-and-seek. Sammy is the youngest member of the Wild Animal Baby Explorers. He is most like the show’s young viewers, who are learning by observing.

Outfit: Red overalls

Favorite Saying: Sammy is learning to express himself, so he sometimes has a hard time finding the right word. He often mispronounces new words, but is excited to learn new vocabulary.

Favorite Activity: Hiding! Sammy loves, loves, loves to hide. But his friends all like finding him.

Funny Habit: When something happens that he doesn’t like, Sammy might get ready to spray a warning and Miss Sally will say, “Stinker Alert!”

Skip

Skip, an endearing “nerdy” rabbit, never met a gadget he didn’t like. He relies on the tools in his beloved Explora-Gear tool belt to observe all things wild.

Type of Animal: Rabbit

Outfit: Blue shorts and a tool belt

Favorite Sayings: “Never fear, I have Explora-gear!”

Strengths: Skip loves putting his brains and great hearing to good use.

Biggest Challenges: Skip has a tendency to overcomplicate things. He loves to invent complicated gadgets to solve simple problems.

Benita

Benita, a creative and imaginative beaver, embraces everything in nature wholeheartedly and unabashedly. Benita is the heart of the group. She uses her imagination and artistic temperament to help solve their challenges.

Type of Animal: Beaver

Outfit: Yellow T-shirt

Favorite Saying: Why use one word when you can use three or more? Benita “loves, loves, loves” all things wild.

Biggest Challenge: Benita is prone to exaggeration. Benita would never describe the scent of a flower as simply “nice.” For Benita, it is “the best, most lovely flower I’ve ever sniffed!”

Funny Habits: Sometimes we get to see inside Benita’s head where she imagines wildlife doing outlandish things.

Izzy

Izzy, a plucky little owl, is determined to do big things and ready to go on any adventure. Izzy is the smallest member of the group, but he is feisty and determined to do BIG things. His energy keeps the Wild Animal Baby Explorers on the move.

Type of Animal: Owl

Outfit: Pilot goggles

Favorite Saying: “Coo-coo-cool!”

Strengths: Able to fly quickly, and gifted with superb eyesight, Izzy uses his keen bird’s-eye-view to help the Explorers find what they are looking for.
Biggest Challenges: Izzy often zooms off to find the answer before he even knows what the question is! Sometimes Izzy finds it difficult to admit he might have been wrong about something.

Miss Sally

Miss Sally, a salamander, keeps an eye on the young explorers. She keeps them on track and helps them makes sense of the things they see. Miss Sally encourages the Wild Animal Baby Explorers to make an adventure out of everything.

Type of Animal:

Outfit: Purple vest

Favorite Saying: “Look around and look around some more!” It’s Miss Sally’s way of telling the group to observe nature and the wonderful surprises of everyday life.

Strengths: Because she’s older, Miss Sally speaks from experience. She sees the big picture and the inter-connectedness of things. She encourages others to learn through doing and to seek answers for themselves.

Funny Habits: We never know when or how Miss Sally will appear. She arrives via an amazing variety of travel gear. Even when she’s not around, Miss Sally is watching over the Explorers and makes sure they are safe.

Episode 1A - "Sled Stuck"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how penguins’ physical characteristics are suited to its habitat.
Summary: The Explorers are bored and decide they want to want to go sledding, only to realize they don't have anything to sled on! Looking around, Izzy spots a penguin sliding on its belly into the ice cold water. The team observes how penguins live in this frigid environment and discover that sliding on your belly isn't a bad way to get from one place to another.

Episode 1B - "Pocket Protector"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe Kangaroos and learn about the special pouches that characterize this marsupial.
Summary: Izzy is having a hard time collecting berries because he can only hold a few in his claws at one time. He wishes he had some kind of carrying devise. The Explorers start thinking about how some animals have “pockets” to hold things and learn about marsupials.

Episode 2A – “Scratch My Back”

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how some animals deal with itches, using beaks, legs, or even trees.
Summary: When Benita has an awful itch in a place she can’t reach, she relies on Izzy to be her back scratcher. But other animals don’t have that luxury so the gang investigates how other animals scratch itches they can’t reach.

Episode 2B – “Legwork

Educational Objective: Viewers will make use of their counting skills when they observe animals with different numbers of legs.
Summary: After a game of hopscotch where Benita discovers she can’t jump as well as the others, the Explorers look at the legs on different animals. They see how the size, number, and shape of an animal’s legs affects its behavior.

Episode 3A – “Beaks and Bills”

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how a bird’s beak determines the food it eats.
Summary: After an unsuccessful attempt to tie a know with his wings, Izzy struggles to tie one using his beak. This leads the gang to wonder how other birds use their beaks.

Episode 3B –"The Mighty Oak Tree"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how oak trees are homes to a number of different animals.
Summary: When an acorn hits Izzy on the head, Sammy thinks the sky is falling. But the explorers soon discover that it’s only an acorn falling from a tree. Then they investigate how acorns turn into oak trees.

Episode 4A – "Stripes and Spots"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe animals with unusual markings.
Summary: Skip and his friends are playing a game of "I Spy" and realize some animals are easier to see than others. After sighting a beautiful ladybug, they begin to wonder what the spots on its back mean and go in search of other creatures with interesting markings.

Episode 4B – "Beatle Mania"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe beetles.
Summary: Benita is planting her garden when Sammy the Skunk sees what he thinks is a strange "walking leaf." But leaves don’t walk! When the Explorers look more closely, they find a beetle underneath, and the group decides to find out more about this interesting insect.

Episode 5A – "Bath Time"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe several different ways in which wild animals groom themselves.
Summary: When Sammy hides because he does not want to take his bath, the Explorers set out on an adventure to see how other wild animals clean themselves. Along the way they see elephants using their trunks as showers and buffaloes bathing with dirt. Yes, dirt!

Episode 5B – "Diving Dolphins"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe dolphins.
Summary: Izzy and the Explorers spot a group of dolphins swimming in the ocean and decide to follow them. By watching closely, the team learns about the unique characteristics of these creatures, including the amazing way they communicate with each other.

Episode 6A – "Fly Away Home"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe Canadian geese, elk, and monarch butterflies during their seasonal migrations.
Summary: Sammy jumps out from a pile of autumn leaves and surprises his friends with a loud, "Boo!" When he notices some birds flying away, he worries that he scared them off. The Explorers follow their feathered friends and discover where the birds are actually going.

Episode 6B – "Hide and Seek"

Educational Objective: Viewers will use their observation skills to find out how an animal’s coloring or shape help it blend in with its surroundings.
Summary: During a game of Hide and Seek, Skip chooses to hide in front of a rock that is the same color as his fur. The group struggles to find him even though he’s right in front of their eyes! The Explorers then become curious about other animals that use their colors to blend in to nature.

Episode 7A – "Side by Side"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how animals cooperate with each other in a coral reef.
Summary: When the Explorers spot a gigantic "fish bird" fly out of the water, they decide to investigate. In the process, they stumble across a coral reef teaming with life and discover how that animals that live there get along.

Episode 7B – "Picky Eaters"

Educational Objectives: Viewers will observe animals that have very limited diets, including pandas and koalas.
Summary: After a delicious picnic, Miss Sally poses the question, "Can you imagine if you only ate just about one thing only?" So the Explorers set out to find animals that only eat one or two things to survive.

Episode 8A – "Good Grips"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how some animals are able to walk on slippery surfaces without slipping.
Summary: When Skip has trouble making it up a snowy hill without slipping, the Explorers decide to search out animals that have "grips" well suited for the environments they live in.

Episode 8B – "Monkey Around"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe behaviors of tree-dwelling and ground-dwelling monkeys.
Summary: In search of bananas, the Explorers remember that monkeys like to eat bananas. If they can find a monkey, then maybe they can find bananas. That quest leads them to observe many different kinds of monkeys.

Episode 9A – "Hurray for Hippos"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe hippopotamuses.
Summary: When the Explorers take a dip to cool down after playing a game of "Simon Says" they encounter a large, yawning hippo. They make the most of the situation by learning all about this large animal.

Episode 9B – "Shell Game"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe the similarities and differences between land and sea turtles.
Summary: While hunting for sea shells Sammy stumbles upon a huge shell. The Explorers soon discover this isn't any old shell when a head pops out and the shell starts to crawl away. Sammy and his friends go on a quest to learn about land and sea turtles.

Episode 10A – "Missing Berries"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe bears, foxes, and moose in order to solve a mystery.
Summary: The berries Izzy and Benita hid up in a tree have gone missing. Where could they be? With only a tuft of brown hair and a paw print, the Explorers go on a quest to find the berry snatcher.

Episode 10B – "Marsh Music"

Educational Objective: Viewers will learn about the marshland habitat and the plants and animals that live there.
Summary: When the Explorers decide they want to start a band, they embark on a quest to find Benita an instrument to play. They discover that many animals in the marsh make beautiful sounds. They also find out that a reed can make a wonderful instrument.

Episode 11A – "Frog Hop"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe frogs.
Summary: While playing “Leap Frog” Sammy realizes that his legs aren’t as good at hopping as real frogs. This discovery sends them on a journey to learn all about frogs.

Episode 11B – "By a Nose"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how animal noses come in many shapes and sizes.
Summary: When Benita startles Sammy he accidentally sprays her with his stinky spray. As the Explorers holds their nose they begin to wonder whether or not all animals are alike.

Episode 12A – "Crowd Pleasers"

Educational Objectives: Viewers will observe how some animals find it helpful to work together.
Summary: When Sammy stumbles across a long line of leaf cutter ants, the Explorers decide to investigate where the ants are going and look for other animals that work together as a team.

Episode 12B – "Ready for Winter"

Educational Objective: Viewers learn how various animals prepare for winter.
Summary: When the weather turns cold, the Explorers wonder how various animals deal with freezing temperatures. They discover that some animals stuff their bellies and then hibernate throughout the winter.

Episode 13A – "Z is for Zebra"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe zebras, as well as identify words that start with the letter "z."
Summary: Playing an alphabet game inspires the Explorers to head to the grasslands of Africa in order to learn about zebras.

Episode 13B – "What’s Up Giraffes?"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe giraffes.
Summary: When Skip's kite gets stuck up in a tree, Izzy is there to rescue it. But the Explorers wonder what they would have done without Izzy's help. So they head out to learn about giraffes and other animals that can reach high places.

Episode 14A – "Rainbow Treasure Hunt"

Educational Objective: Viewers will learn how the different colors of the rainbow can be found in the plants and animals around them.
Summary: When the Explorers see a beautiful rainbow they decide to go on a treasure hunt to find the colors in the rainbow in nature. They are pleasantly surprised to see how colorful plants and animals can be.

Episode 14B – "Crab Walk"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe crabs and look at how them move from place to place.
Summary: While playing at the beach building, the Explorers stumble upon some fiddler crabs. Their discovery leads them on an investigation of all things crab.

Episode 15A – "A Seahorse, of Course!"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe seahorses.
Summary: The Explorers think they know all about horses, but Miss Sally challenges them to find a horse that lives in the sea. So the gang dives in learn all about seahorses.

Episode 15B – "Seeing Snow Prints"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe animals that live in a snowy habitat, including Arctic foxes, bears, bighorn sheep, otters, seals, and Arctic hares.
Summary: When the Explorers find a set of footprints in the snow, they go in search of the animal that made them. Along the way, the gang learns about a variety of animals that live in the snowy habitat.

Episode 16A – "Slow Down!"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe slow moving animals, including snails, tortoises, and koalas.
Summary: The Explorers investigate several “slowpoke” animals to show Izzy that it’s not necessarily a good thing to always be in a rush.

Episode 16B – "Itsy Bitsy Spider"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe spiders and their web building skills.
Summary: When Benita teaches Sammy the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" song, the Explorers find a spider in its web. So they decide to learn how different kinds of spiders live.

Episode 17A – "Home Tweet Home"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe different types of bird nests.
Summary: After finding a bird’s nest on the ground, the Explorers decide to learn all about bird nests. They discover there are as many different kinds of nests as there are different kinds of birds.

Episode 17B – "Eye Spy!"

Educational Objective: Viewers will learn how different kinds of eyes help animals see in different ways.
Summary: A game of "I Spy" shows that Izzy’s eyesight is better than the other Explorers. This realization gets the gang wondering how different kinds of eyes help animals see in different ways.

Episode 18A – "Dig This!"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how and why different animals dig.
Summary: While looking for buried treasure, the Explorers find a turtle digging in the sand. They decide to investigate the many different ways and reasons that animals dig on land and even underwater.

Episode 18B – "Sharp Dressers"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how some animals protect themselves with a covering of spines and quills.
Summary: While playing hide-and-seek, Sammy gets some thistles stuck in his fur. This prompts the Explorers to find animals that have prickly bodies and learn how they use their spines for protection.

Episode 19A – "Show Offs"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how some birds "show off" to impress other birds.
Summary: When Izzy shows off his dance moves, the others tease him for showing off. So Izzy leads them on an investigation of birds, and the Explorers discover that Izzy is not the only bird that likes to show off.

Episode 19B – "Hello Kitties!"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe different kinds of wild cats.
Summary: After Sammy roars like a lion during an animal guessing game, the Explorers go on an adventure to learn about lions and other wild cats.

Episode 20A – "Leader of the Pack"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe coyotes working together to raise their pups, search for food, and protect their territory.
Summary: While playing soccer, the Explorers hear a wild sound. It doesn’t take them long to discover the sound was made by a coyote. They also discover that coyotes are interesting animals that do a lot more than howl.

Episode 20B –"Telling Tails"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe how animals use their tails.
Summary: Benita makes a huge wave when she splashes her big, flat tail. So Miss Sally challenges the Explorers to find out how different animals use their tails.

Episode 21A – "Head Gear"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe animals with horns and antlers.
Summary: Benita pretends to be a matador while Sammy pretends to be a bull with horns. This simple game gives Skip the idea to investigate real animals with horns and antlers.

Episode 21B – "Scales and Tails"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe reptiles, including lizards, iguanas, crocodiles, and alligators, and learn about reptiles’ unique characteristics and behaviors.
Summary: It’s Sammy’s birthday and he wants to go exploring for dragons even though the others tell him they are not real. So the Explorers go looking for animals that look like dragons instead.

Episode 22A – "Romp of Otters"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe similarities and differences between river and sea otters.
Summary: When Izzy spots a bunch of otters hanging out in the water, the Explorers decide to learn all about river and sea otters.

Episode 22B– "Sea Softies"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe various soft-bodied sea creatures, including jellyfish, anemones, octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish.
Summary: While cleaning their boat, the Explorers see what looks like balloons in the water. But when they dive in for a closer look, they discover lots of sea creatures with soft bodies.

Episode 23A– "Wild Ride"

Educational Objective: Viewers will observe the different ways mother animals carry their babies.
Summary: When Sammy wants a piggyback ride from Skip, Benita wonders how other animals carry each other. This prompts the Explorers to find out how different baby animals get rides from their mothers.
