William Constable Adam was an English

Adam was born in Tweedmouth on the outskirts of Berwick-upon-Tweed
in 1846. He studied under Auguste-Joseph Delecluse in Paris as well as Robert Brydall and Robert Greenlees at the Glasgow School of Art
. He spent some time in Buenos Aires
before emigrating to Boston, Massachusetts in 1893. He moved to California in the late 19th century, first settling in Monterey
in 1898 before moving to Pacific Grove
in 1906 where he lived for the rest of his life. He was known as “Professor” Adam and his work focused on the views and landscape of the Monterey area. He also gave art lessons in his rose-covered cottage at 450 Central Avenue.
