Smith ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1921 Alberta general election

. He stood as a United Farmers candidate in the electoral district of Redcliff. The race was hotly contested as Smith faced Speaker of the Assembly Charles Pingle

The 1926 boundary redistribution saw Redcliff abolished. Smith ran for re-election in the new seat of Empress. Smith faced two other candidates in the election held that year

Smith ran for a fourth term in the 1935 Alberta general election
