On 27 May 2009 Murphy was charged with introducing counterfeit bank notes into Spain. The player was arrested earlier in May 2009, while visiting Torremolinos

 on a stag party with some team-mates. The arrest related to an incident in Spain in 2007 when he was detained after allegedly passing counterfeit money.

2010/11 season

During this season William Murphy was placed in the transfer list by his club and also fined for a breach of discipline within the club. The club have not stated what this issue is.
