William Parker High School
Encyclopedia
Howell's Parker High School is a vacant public high school building in Marion Township
(Howell, Michigan
). It is a part of the Howell Public Schools district and was the sister school to Howell High School. It was completed in August 2007, and the nearly $70 million building is equipped with cutting-edge technology.
During the spring of 2006, construction on the new school advanced on schedule and within budget. Parker High School opened for the 2007-2008 school year on September 4th, 2007. Due to budget limitations the district was not able to keep Parker's doors open and was shut down in 2008 after one year of use.
The school colors were Red, White, and Navy.
The principal (as of Feb 2008) was William Smith.
Parker was run on "flex scheduling" to help with the overcrowding of the campus. Students were able to attend classes from 7:40 am until 11:00 pm, but sports were still scheduled at the traditional time. Students that had "traditional scheduling" began at 8:05 am and were released at 2:47 pm. However, students may have chosen to come to school at a later time in the day and still finish at 2:47 pm if one of their classes could be done outside of school, such as Senior Capstone. This allowed students more flexibility for activities such as a job or doing internships with local businesses. Although most students attended school at the William R. Parker Campus, a small group of students attended classes at the Howell High School campus, where one wing had been left open to students to help with the over-crowding at the new Parker Campus. With the scheduling options students had the option of taking a course online. This allowed all work except exams to be done outside of school and not during a scheduled class period, except on test days. The flexibility of the schedules at the school mimicked that of many colleges, which helped prepare students for college.
Another addition to the school was the Lansing Community College wing, in which college classes were offered to both college students and students of the high school. Students had the option of dual-enrollment in these classes, meaning they were offered both college and high school credit for the classes, offering more flexibility and more options to students.
The new Parker Campus is equipped with brand new technology, including wireless internet throughout the entire school, combination-less lockers, data projectors in every classroom, and a staff-less school store.
Howell High School's unused Parker Campus was chosen as the primary filming location for the upcoming film High School
, starring Adrian Brody and Michael Chiklis
. Shooting began November 8th, 2008. It is also the filming site of upcoming television teen show "The Wannabes."
