Chattaroy High School and Liberty High School consolidated into Williamson High in 1966.
On June 7, 2011, Williamson High School closed its doors forever. The final bell rang at 2:43pm EST. The 101 year-old school consolidated with Gilbert, Matewan and Burch high schools to form the newly established Mingo Central High School
. MCHS is set to open in August 2011. The new school is being constructed 25 miles south of Williamson at a height of 1,940 feet, on top of a reclaimed surface mining site in Newtown, WV (approx. 7 miles south of Matewan).

Basketball
WHS was home to one of West Virginia's most successful high school basketball programs, including six state championships. Williamson High School remains the last Public High School to win a State Championship in West Virginia's Class "A" division (2001), and is the only school to compete in championship games in each class (A,AA,& AAA).
