From 1997 to 2004, he was a member of the Council on Housing, Physical Planning, and Environment (VROM-raad) of the Netherlands. Also he was scientific director of the Utrecht Centre for Energy Research UCE), and a member of the General Energy Council (AER) of the Netherlands.
