Winder (the first syllable is pronounced like "wine") is located at 33°59′47"N 83°43′15"W (33.996495, -83.720873).

, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29 km²), of which, 10.8 square miles (28 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1 km²) of it (3.21%) is water.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,924, and the median income for a family was $40,896. Males had a median income of $31,371 versus $21,736 for females. The per capita income
for the city was $17,108. About 10.3% of families and 13.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 16.8% of those age 65 or over.
It lacks the many retail establishments and restaurants of its neighbors. In August 2006, Winder residents passed a Sunday liquor by the drink ordinance.
In late 2008, a small Amish community was established on the outskirts of Winder.
