The current building opened in 1980, prior to that what is currently Winfield Middle School housed students in grades 6-12. Winfield High underwent major expansion in 2006 to compensate for the extreme overcrowding of the school and to update many of the facilities. The 6 million dollar project was completed in the fall of 2007. After several years at the Class AA, Winfield was reclassified as a Class AAA school by the WVSSAC in the fall of 2008.
