Winter (Starbucks)

Winter (born circa 1972) is a freelance software programmer who set out in 1997 to visit every Starbucks
location. As of May 2009, he had visited over 8414 locations in the United States and Canada and an additional 664 in Europe, Asia, Mexico, and the Middle East). Winter was the subject of a documentary in 2006 about his quest.
Winter estimates he's spent about $100,000 on the project and drinks an average of 10 cups of coffee a day. When he started the project in 1997, Starbucks had only 1,500 stores Winter usually sleeps in his car but sometimes stays with friends on his travels.
With the economic downturn in 2008 and 2009, Starbucks began closing unprofitable stores. Winter did not see this as simplifying his task but just the opposite. When he learned that a store in Prince George, British Columbia, was closing the following day, he spent $1400 on a plane ticket to get there for a photograph and a cup of coffee before it closed.
