The city of Woodbine was founded by James Allen Gillett on July 16, 1887. He named it Woodbine after his former hometown of Woodbine, Illinois. In 1872, James Gillett built a water powered grist mill on Lyon's Creek. Local farmers could bring in their grain to be ground. The mill burned in 1892 and was not rebuilt.
