The Games was originally scheduled to be held in the cities of Duisburg and Düsseldorf of Germany. However, the cities could not secure enough funding partly as a result of the global economic downturn in 2009, and gave up the hosting right. During the World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the IWGA announced that Cali, Colombia is award the right to host World Games 2013.
