The racial makeup of the county was 68.69 % White, 29.57 % Black or African American, 0.36 % Native American, 0.22 % Asian, 0.01 % Pacific Islander, 0.61 % from other races, and 0.55 % from two or more races. 1.09 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 8,106 households out of which 36.3 % have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7 % were married couples
living together, 15.7 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5 % were non-families. 21.5 % of all households were made up of individuals and 9 % had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the county, the population was spread out with 28.6 % under the age of 18, 8.1 % from 18 to 24, 27.50 % from 25 to 44, 23.90 % from 45 to 64, and 12 % who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $32,384, and the median income for a family was $38,887. Males had a median income of $31,668 versus $20,950 for females. The per capita income
