accidentally knocks Winklebottom over while playing with it, breaking the gnome's ear off. Panicked, he runs to Hank to see about fixing it; Hank gets out his glue kit and is about to make the simple repair, but instead seizes the opportunity to get rid of the gnome, lying to Bobby that Winklebottom cannot be salvaged. He takes Bobby out that night and attempts to discard the gnome in other neighbors' trash cans, but eventually resorts to burying the gnome in the woods and running over the 'grave' with his truck. Hank swears Bobby to secrecy, and feigns disappointment when Peggy immediately finds Winklebottom missing the next morning. Sally calls the police, making Bobby nervous, but the officer dismisses it as a teenage prank.

Hank soon succumbs to guilt after seeing how hard Peggy takes the gnome's disappearance and tells an indignant Bobby that he has to come clean to his mother about the gnome's fate, but promises to take all the blame. However, Peggy doesn't buy Hank's confession, believing him incapable of such betrayal, and suspects that he's covering for Bobby even after Hank tells her his true feelings about the gnome. Peggy angrily grounds Bobby, who in turn is justifiably cross with Hank but convinces him to seek a replacement gnome at a nearby German-themed tourist town called New Hoffensheim to set things straight. With no other options, Hank ends up wrangling a similar gnome named Figgleforth from another gnome fan, placing the new gnome in Winklebottom's old spot in the yard. Peggy gives Hank credit for what had been Bobby's idea (much to Bobby's further consternation), but also agrees to suspend Bobby's punishment, and additionally agrees to keep the gnome inside to protect it from real teenage pranksters, recalling the police officer's comments. Hank is initially happy to once again have a gnome-free lawn, but with Figgleforth now in the master bedroom he ends up feeling compelled to change clothes in the closet to avoid the gnome's creepy stare.
