The headwaters of the river rise in high country on the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range
about 11 kilometres south west of Yarrowitch
. It flows generally north north east crossing the Oxley Highway
before spilling over the Yarrowitch Falls in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park
. The Yarrowitch River joins the Apsley River
about 30 km (18.6 mi) north east of Tia. The Apsley River then joins the Macleay River
which is about 24 km (14.9 mi) south west of the locality of Lower Creek.
The entire length of the Yarrowitch River is within the boundaries of Walcha Local Government Area
and Vernon County
.
The country above the Yarrowitch Falls is a rich grazing area used for rearing livestock
