When the constituency was created in 1979, it consisted of the Westminster Parliament constituencies of Barnsley
, Dearne Valley
, Doncaster
, Don Valley
, Penistone
, Rotherham
and Rother Valley
. In 1984, Barnsley, Dearne Valley, Doncaster and Penistone were replaced by Barnsley Central, Barnsley East
, Doncaster Central
, Doncaster North
and Wentworth
, and the boundaries of the other constituencies changed. Boundary changes again occurred in 1994.
The area is now included in the Yorkshire and the Humber
European Parliament Constituency, which was represented by seven members in 1999-2004 and six from 2004 onwards.
