History

Yountsville is named for the Daniel Yount family that built a series of mills along a small spring fed tributary of Sugar Creek. The mills and accompanying buildings provided work and supplies for the area back in the 19th century. Fleece from sheep was brought to the Mill to be cleaned, carded, spun, dyed, woven, and sewn into clothing and blankets. Civil War uniforms were made here. Yountsville was a small thriving village through the mid-1880s ceasing operation in 1905. With the introduction of the railroad the importance of the area mills diminished and today Yountsville comprises just a few houses and a local church. One of the mill buildings, a 1864 Greek Revival brick mill structure stands on the bank of Sugar Creek. The 1851 Federal style boarding house / Inn sits 60 feet above the mill overlooking Sugar Creek. See current photos including Historic Preservation http://www.YountsvilleMill.com

The Yountsville covered bridge, built in 1848, traversed Sugar Creek and existed until 1948. Originally State Road 32 was just a straight shot over Sugar Creek but the modern bridge was built just south of where the old covered bridge sat and this created an scenic curving bend through the woods and over the creek.
