Even more recently the School again featured on S4C in "Cymer Fi", which followed six students as they completed various challenges and tasks. The program followed the students as they went through singing coaching, quitting smoking, behavioural problems and rugby aspirations. Ysgol Gyfun Cymer is a Welsh-speaking school with high standards, as proven by the latest excellent inspection report.
The school itself has also been in the records for one of the most successful GCSE pass grades in 2005 with 90% of pupils passing maths with a C grade or above.
and has a number of former pupils playing in the Welsh leagues. A number of pupils have reached internationals at different age groups with former pupil Geraint Morris playing for Welsh regional side The Celtic Warriors
in the European Heineken cup.
Three sixth form students (Geraint Evans, Liam H. Thomas, and Ashley Bateman) were selected for the Wales U/18 Rugby League squad. Geraint and Ashley played against the North of England side in Manchester (November 2006). Geraint also represented Wales U/19 against Australia (November 2006). Also Will Grif John was selected for the Welsh Union U20s and played in the Six Nations and World Cup as a prop, at just 18.
Cymers year 9 and 11 last year won the national cups, which is the Powerade Cup, a first ever there for two years of the same school to win the tournament in the same season.

History
Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda opened in 1988 in response to the growing demand for Welsh medium education in the area. To this day it remains the only Welsh Secondary School in the Rhondda, with around 1,000 students. Pupils who attend the school come from all over the Rhondda, from the five Welsh Primary Schools:- Llyn-Y-Forwyn (Ferndale)

Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda appeared in popular Welsh television show Pam Fi Duw? on Welsh Television channel S4C. The long running show gained a large Rhondda fanbase, from both English and Welsh speaking people, because it was featured in a place they knew.
