From youth she was very talented in all kind of sports she did like water polo

, athletics. When she was 14 a judo trainer of Litecom school Ruperto Guaúña was looking for a girls in his judo team. That's how Yuri became a judoka.
Yuri begun with judo late but she already had physical condition from previous sport so she just needed to learn technical aspects of judo. She did it well and today is one of the best judoka in the world.
She is very good friend with other top Colombian judoka Anny Cortez
.
Two weeks before 2010 Pan American Judo Championships
after training she felt some pain in left knee. She went to doctor and he found that she has torn ACL
.
In 2008 she participated Olympic Games in Beijing where she placed 7th losing very close match with Leire Iglesias from Spain
and lost change to fight for medal.
In 2009 she won World Championships
in Rotterdam
. In final she gained victory over Anett Mészáros
from Hungary
and became third South American judoka who won the title by Natasha Hernández in 1984
