Heskia became in 1966 international audience for "Gorechto Pladne" (Torrid Noon), the first Bulgarian contribution to the Cannes Film Festival
and a nomination for the Palme d'Or
. In 1981 he won the spezial prize at the Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF)
for "Yo Ho Ho".
Zako Heskia works together with the former state Boyana Film Studio in Sofia.
