History
The district is one of the youngest districts in Russia, formed in 2006. Zapolyarny translates as "Polar", and the district was given this name because the vast majority of the district's area lies north of the arctic circle. The district was initially formed as a municipal district , but on April 19, 2010, the status of the district was legally changed from municipal to administrative. Zapolyarny is the only administrative district in the Okrug and consists of all the land within Nenetsia.Geography
The district has a size of approximately 177,000 km2, more than four times the size of Switzerland. The district is around 320 km from north to south and around 950 km from east to west, stretching from Mys Bolvansky Nos in the north to the source of the Oma River in the south and Cape Kanin Nos in the west to the banks of the Kara River in the east.Economy
Because the boundary of Zapolyarny District is identical to that of Nenetsia, there is no economic sector of significance to the district that is not also of equal significance to the Okrug. The main economic drivers are oil and gas, though reindeer husbandry is still seen as a core part of the culture of the indigenous Nenets people.Divisions
