The club was founded on February 13, 1949, and played its first official game in 1950. The first trophy of ŽRK Budućnost won in 1984 and it was the Cup of Yugoslavia Trophy. The very next year, ŽRK Budućnost became the champions of Yugoslavia. The same year (1985), the girls from Podgorica won their first European title, the Cup Winners' Cup. Until then it was the most successful season for Budućnost, and the club was pronounced "the best club in the country".
As of 1988/1989 season, ŽRK Budućnost dominated the national competition, and was the champion of all the now defunct countries - SFR Yugoslavia, FR Yugoslavia, Serbia & Montenegro. The club continued to dominate the nationsl championship in Montenegro
since it gained independence in 2006.
The last trophy ŽRK Budućnost won was the Cup Winners' Cup (2006) by defeating Győri Audi ETO KC
in the final. The first leg played in Podgorica on 13 May ended in a 25–25 draw. However, Budućnost beat Győr in the second leg played on 20 May by 26–23 and won the title with an aggregate score of 51–48.
