History

On 13 October 1945, the War Department

 published a postwar policy statement for the entire Army, requesting a 27-division Army National Guard structure with 25 infantry divisions and 2 armored divisions. Once the process of negotiation was complete, among the new formations formed, for the first time in the National Guard, were armored divisions. As a result, the 48th "Hurricane" Infantry Division was formed in September 1946. Originally an infantry unit, on 1 November 1955 the division was redesignated as an armored division.  was inactivated in 1963, its units were assigned to the 48th Armored Division. In a 1968 reorganization, the 48th and 49th Armored Divisions were disbanded.
