Affinity mask

An affinity mask is a bit mask

a thread
or process
should be run on by the scheduler
of an operating system
. Setting the affinity mask for certain processes running under Windows can be useful as there are several system processes (especially on domain controllers) that are restricted to the first CPU / Core. So, excluding the first CPU might lead to better application performance.
can be specified with the SetThreadAffinityMask function. Forcing of each OpenMP
thread to distinctive cores in Windows can be accomplished by means of the following C
code:
Mask (computing)
In computer science, a mask is data that is used for bitwise operations.Using a mask, multiple bits in a byte, nibble, word can be set either on, off or inverted from on to off in a single bitwise operation.-Masking bits to 1:...

Central processing unit
The central processing unit is the portion of a computer system that carries out the instructions of a computer program, to perform the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of the system. The CPU plays a role somewhat analogous to the brain in the computer. The term has been in...

Thread (computer science)
In computer science, a thread of execution is the smallest unit of processing that can be scheduled by an operating system. The implementation of threads and processes differs from one operating system to another, but in most cases, a thread is contained inside a process...

Scheduling (computing)
In computer science, a scheduling is the method by which threads, processes or data flows are given access to system resources . This is usually done to load balance a system effectively or achieve a target quality of service...
