Akbil is an integrated electronic ticket
system used for payment in public transport of Istanbul
, Turkey
. It is valid for boarding busses, funiculars, LRT, metro, commuter trains, ferryboats and trams operated by the Metropolian Municipality. Unlike by payment cash, the Akbil allows passenger transfer service within the tranportation network under some defined conditions. Akbil is an acronym formed from "akıllı", which stands for "smart", and "bilet" meaning "ticket".
The Akbil device is touched to the reader at the faregate to gain access for boarding or on the vehicle to ride. The system uses iButtons or smart radio-frequency identification cards as tickets. Akbil's are 1-Wire
(iButton) electronic tags. The keyfob version of the device has the emblem of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality moulded on it.
The units may be acquired from office near major transport interchanges against a refundable deposit of 6 TL
, and loaded with credits there up to 150 TL. Alternatively, loading credits may be done at special purpose machines or at newsstands or small shops, which offer this service.
