in 1837, the son of James and Ritchie (Walker) Brownlie and nephew of Alexander Brownlie who built the sod house. The family moved to Scott County, Iowa
in 1838. He was educated at home and then in a school house near Long Grove that was established when he was about ten years old. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) near Long Grove was begun in the family home. After he married Elizabeth Thompson in 1862 he moved from his parent’s home onto his own on farm land that he purchased near Long Grove. He and his wife raised four children and they farmed for twelve years. Brownlie then became involved in the live stock business full time. He specialized in shorthorn cattle, Poland China
hogs and Percheron
horses. He retired to Davenport, Iowa
