Alpha was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature
and signed by Governor Woodrow Wilson
on June 26, 1911, from portions of Pohatcong Township
, based on the results of a referendum held on May 31, 1911.
Alpha is one of the eastern-most locations within the Lehigh Valley
region of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey.

, the borough has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km²), of which 1.7 square miles (4.4 km²) is land and 0.04 square mile (0.1035995244 km²) (2.30%) is water.

living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the borough the population was spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.
