Funding for the trail from the NZCT budget was approved in July 2010, after the trail had been shortlisted as one of 13 from 54 nation-wide proposals.
The $2.75 million from the NZCT are intended to go towards a 312 km long trail running from Mt Cook via Twizel
and Lake Ohau
to Omarama
and Duntroon
to Oamaru
