The victory sparked off wild celebrations, and many South African spectators broke down in tears of joy. Tony Greig himself sounded emotionally exhausted as he said, "Look, there are tears, they are crying out there! The South Africans at the Bullring today have seen the best one day international ever played."
Both Ponting and Gibbs were awarded the Man of the Match, but Ponting declined it, saying that it belonged to Gibbs. Shaun Pollock
was named Man of the Series, although he was resting for a back injury during this game.
